The Power of Google Search

The Google home page search box is a great blend of minimalism and power. It provides a simple command-line interface to a powerful, behind the scenes network.

The "search" box allows you to do more than just search for web pages:

1. It is a full calculator - just enter a math equation like (34+23)*7 to get the result.

2. Tracks packages - simply enter a USPS, UPS, or Fed Ex tracking number.

3. Find a theater and show times - enter the movie name and zip code, i.e. "iron man 2 10022".

4. Flight information - simply enter the airline and flight number.

5. Sports results - just type in the name of a team.

6. Government websites - search them by going to google.com/unclesam

7. Currency conversions - enter a phrase like "dollars in rupees" or "USD in INR" or "100 dollars in pounds".

8. Search within a website - i.e. "Iraq cnn.com" searches CNN for Iraq.

9. Time zones - i.e. "time Moscow"

10. Conversions - examples include "10 teaspoons in ounces", "meters in feet", "cups in gallons".

Key to Successful Websites - Simplicity and Focus

A key way to succeed in mathematical and technical disciplines such as designing websites is to apply simplicity and focus.

The web has matured to where it is really hard to successfully create a general site for the masses.

Successful websites today are opportunistic - they spot a specific need and fill it.

One successful site with a clever focus is the website for Blue Sky Scrubs, which specializes in medical scrubs clothing - including white lab coats and accessories.

Because Blue Sky Scrubs keeps its merchandise selection simple and specialized, their website clutter free, well organized, and easy to navigate.

It becomes a snap for visitors to look up whatever types of scrubs sets they are interested in.
